I actually traded one of them for a Strider WP fixed blade so the work can pay off. I think that BF thread started when I posted some mods I did a few years ago. Learn to tie a noose/Reeve knot if you want to wrap them. It does nothing to make things better except to put a gouge in the handle if the head flies off from a bad throw. Use a round file to re-shape the inside of the eye for a better fit and lose the set screw. I also used some cold gun bluing to darken the head afterward. The haft (handles) are very hard so a small drill bit will help in getting the tacks located. I had some leather thong left over from something but you can use leather boot lace. IIRC, I used paint stripper, a propane torch, sand paper, stain and linseed oil. My first mod was the Trailhawk with the brass tacks. I am sure I will have a fun day of work using it finding out.:whee: I wounder if it work's as good as it looks. I may use some tacks if I can find the right one's that are not brass. I do want to stick to using natural material's on it if I do add to it. The tomahawk's head looks way better with out the thick black paint and the handle has a great feel after sanding and finishing. I am happy with the work I have done to it. I want to wrap the handle with leather and I will do some wood burning to it - with a wood burner I am not going to torch it- I got a few Idea's Im thinking about trying. I used a heavy duty paste paint stripper on the head and the thick black paint came off easily. I removed the handle sanded and stained it a light blond color to go with the little grain the wood handle had.
The old Norse hawk did through nice though. The handle cracked so it was time to replace it and I figured I could just as well get a new one with a hammer end like I should have begin with. I have used the same CS Norse hawk for about 10 years it been a good tool. I got a Cold Steel Rifleman's hawk in the mail Tuesday but I have had plans to refinish one of these for a long while now.
